AI Wrote Your Resume. It Still Can't Tell Anyone What You Actually Did.
More new engineers are using AI to write their resumes than ever before. That's not the problem.
The problem is what AI can't do for you — and it's exposing something that was probably true before AI ever entered the picture: a lot of new engineers can describe what they built, but not what it actually did.
If you've ever written a bullet point that says something like "Built a scheduling app using Python and Flask," and stopped there — this is for you.
The Bullet Point That Says Nothing
Here's the test. Read this line:
"Built a software application that automates inventory tracking."
Now ask: so what? What happened because that existed? Did it save time? Reduce errors? Replace a spreadsheet three people were fighting over? Did anyone actually use it?
An AI tool can help you phrase that sentence more smoothly. It can fix your grammar, tighten your wording, suggest stronger verbs. What it can't do is invent an impact you never measured or never thought to track in the first place. If the input is "I built X," the output — no matter how well-written — is still just "I built X."
That's the gap. Not writing quality. Missing substance.
Why This Is Showing Up Now
AI resume tools are good at polish. They take rough bullet points and make them sound more professional, more concise, more confident. That's genuinely useful.
But polish applied to a hollow sentence just produces a more articulate hollow sentence. And because AI-smoothed language often sounds more impressive than it used to, the gap between "sounds impactful" and "actually communicates impact" is getting harder for new engineers to notice — and harder for hiring managers to ignore, because they've read a hundred versions of the same AI-polished nothing this month.
If your resume can't answer "and what happened because of that?" — the AI didn't fail you. The project description did.
The Fix: Build the Sentence in Two Parts
Every project bullet point should have two components, not one:
What you built or did — then — what resulted from it.
"I built [X], which resulted in [Y]."
That's it. That's the whole framework. If you can't fill in the second half, that's diagnostic information — it tells you (and eventually, a hiring manager) that you built something without tracking or understanding its effect.
Weak version: "Built a software application that automates inventory tracking."
Strong version: "Built an inventory tracking application that replaced a shared spreadsheet three team members were manually updating, reducing data entry errors by an estimated 40% and cutting weekly reconciliation time from two hours to twenty minutes."
Same project. Completely different signal. The second version doesn't just describe work — it proves the person understood why the work mattered.
If You Genuinely Don't Know the Impact
Sometimes the honest answer is: you don't know. The project was for a class, or a personal build, or an internship where nobody measured outcomes.
That's fixable — but not with better phrasing. It's fixable by asking better questions before you write the resume:
Who used this, and what were they doing before it existed?
What would have happened if this hadn't been built?
Is there any number attached to this at all — time, cost, errors, users, requests, size?
If there's truly no measurable outcome, is there a smaller, honest claim you can make instead (e.g., "reduced manual steps from 6 to 2") rather than inflating vague language to sound bigger than it is?
New engineers should be prepared to answer these before an AI tool ever touches their resume — because an interviewer will ask the same questions, and "I'm not sure" in an interview lands very differently than it does on paper.
The Real Skill Being Tested
Communicating impact isn't a resume trick. It's the same skill you'll need in a project retro, a status update to your manager, or a promotion case a few years from now. A resume is just the first place it gets tested — and increasingly, it's the first place AI makes it obvious whether that skill exists yet or not.
